For many small businesses, intellectual property (IP) protects more than just your business idea – it protects the potential sustainability of your business. IP includes various areas of your business from your logos, products/services to even the way you automate certain processes your business offers.
In this seminar, it will provide you with a break down of what entrepreneurs and small business owners need to know about patents, copyrights, domain names, and trademarks and how to avoid legal troubles before they happen. Topics include:
- How trademarks, copyrights, patents, domain names, and business name registrations all differ.
- Why it is important for any new business to select a trademark that will be both federally registrable and legally protectable, highlighting factors critical when choosing a mark.
- The importance of doing a complete search and whether an attorney should be used.
- What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights in a mark and issues a “cease-and-desist” letter.
- Information on what the USPTO does in the federal registration process and how to avoid “scams” perpetrated by companies that request fees for services not required by the USPTO.
Biographical information:
Jason Lott works within the Office of the Commissioner for Trademarks in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Alexandria, Virginia. Currently, he is the Attorney Advisor for Trademark Educational Outreach, assisting the effort for increased USPTO educational activities in the area of trademark fundamentals. For four years prior, he spearheaded the Pro Se Video Work Project, tasked with creating multimedia-based trademark educational materials. Mr. Lott has been with the USPTO since 2000, previously serving as a Law Office Examining Attorney.
